There are moments when you feel like your living room needs a slight change in style. And there are moments when you stand in front of your living room, dreaming of a change but don't have time to follow the trends and find something for your home.

Furniture Shop App is the solution to problems like these surrounding one's home. Here are some of the screens in motion.

The features of app are engaging micro-interactions that add enjoyment to a previously dull process.

the challenge

the challenge

The core of the challenge was "to streamline the process of planning and interior with help of AR", which is surrounded by a number of tasks. For example, it involves decorating a small room, finding design inspiration, discovering products to complete your projects and the list can go on.

I did not want to jump right into ideating concepts based on assumptions. Instead, I wanted to understand as much of the interior planning experience as I could in this limited amount of time to make sure my concept was effective and valuable to users.

Problem Scope & Target Audience

Problem Scope & Target Audience

When preparing the script, I kept the questions open enough for the participant to elaborate on their relationship with decorating and online shopping. In this phase, it was especially important for me to be unbiased and open so that I could spot the pain points.

Competitive Audit

Competitive Audit

Now that I had knowledge about the highs and lows in the user's emotions when conducting the tasks, I could look at some existing solutions to see how they are handling the issues. I picked the highest-rated apps in the AR furniture industry category and here are two of them.

  • Houzz

  • Ikea Place

Both of the apps are functionally well-rounded. Buttons improve usability by placing them in the most accessible spots.

The information architecture is a little confusing while reviewing the product with AR. Adding products to cart is not easy.

User Interview & Persona Development

I've conducted user interviews with three people to understand user habits on furniture shopping, what are the aspects they consider before purchasing, and their approaches to online shopping.

To inquire the pain points and current solutions, I interviewed 5 participants and created two personas

After the user research, I considered that there should be two different flows in the application.

One of them is to proceed according to the ready-made sandwich recipes inside the application. The second is to proceed with the suggested sandwich recipes based on the ingredients the user has.

In the early design, the design inspiration for the decoration ideas appeared on the homepage. As a result of the user testing, it was revealed that it would be easier for users to list main categories on the homepage.

EVALUATION

One of the most frequent operations in AR Furniture Shop App is checking decorations in progress and seeing the products in the camera screen. During the evaluations, it was observed that the user was constantly placing/zooming in a product with one hand while holding the device with the other hand.

One of the most important things I learned from this study is the importance of considering different contexts and user environments. Due to many possible reasons (habits, life style, age, etc.), one user can have quite different needs than another user, and one user can have different needs at different times.
